III. The Three Great Strategies for the Settlement of Cheon Il Guk
2. Creating the Environment
1) World Summit
True Father: “There is a limit to peace initiatives centered on the government. Hence, I created various NGOs, such as UPF, to do the work of the United Nations in its place. The ‘Abel UN’ is the corporate body of all NGOs that are active in the peace movement.”
True Mother: “As much as we love and respect the UN, we know that the UN needs to be made anew. It must become a UN that works for the benefit of all humankind rather than a UN that is centered on the benefits sought by individual countries.”
The World Summit hosted by the Universal Peace Federation re-illuminates the peace vision and work of the True Parents of Heaven, Earth and Humankind, and actively conducts peace initiatives in diverse fields to encourage nations to respect each other, communicate, seek ways to peace, and form coalitions in order to bring about that peace across the globe.
To further accelerate the providence following the anniversary of True Father’s Holy Ascension, True Mother has been calling heads of state, top leaders and experts from all walks of life to come together, providing them with the meaningful opportunity to discuss ways to achieve permanent peace in the future, and how to solve major pending problems.
Diverse events were held as part of the ‘World Summit 2019’, including the launching of the International Summit Council for Peace, the 3rd SunHak Peace Prize Award Ceremony, the Assembly of the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP), the Assembly of the Interreligious Association for Peace and Development (IAPD), and the 2019 International Conference on Peace on the Korean Peninsula.
2) Inauguration of the International Summit Council for Peace (ISCP)
True Parents gave directives to establish an international organization that will bring together former and current heads of states from around the world to discuss global agendas and mobilize good will, saying that the governing philosophy and administration of former and current heads of state, and that of other eminent figures, can play a major role in leading the consciousness of people in a righteous direction, in resolving the diverse difficult problems of our international society, in bringing about joy to people and in realizing permanent peace in the world.
The International Summit Council for Peace was inaugurated in Jamsil Lotte Hotel, on 1.4 by the heavenly calendar in the 7th year of Cheon Il Guk (Feb. 8, 2019) in the presence of about 600 former and current heads of state and leaders from all walks of life.
At the inauguration of the International Summit Council for Peace, True Parents called nations to turn away from economy-centered policies that only pursue the interests of individual nations, proposing a meeting of heads of states that can advance mutual understanding and trust on a whole new level. Following this, the World Summit conducted discussions on the issue of realizing world peace based on topics transcending the interests of individual nations. The 50 current and former heads of state from around the world who were attending the inauguration all expressed their resolve to work together in support of True Parents’ objectives by declaring and signing the inaugural resolution.
True Mother gave a medal to each assembled dignitary on the platform, recognizing their support and agreement. Thereafter, True Mother struck the gong to celebrate the historic beginning of the International Summit Council for Peace.
3) Establishment of the SunHak Peace Prize
The SunHak Peace Prize honors True Parents’ legacy and peace vision of one great family under God. The prize, which consists of a medal, a plaque and prize money, is presented every two years to individuals or groups who have made a big difference in awakening respect and love for humanity, in resolving, through love and harmony, conflicts that are a threat to peace and in creating a world where man and the ecology smoothly co-exist. Laureates include the 2015 winners, Kiribati President Mr. Anote Tong and Indian biologist and fisheries scientist Dr. Modagugu Vijay Gupta; and the 2017 winners, Dr. Gino Strada, Italian war surgeon and Dr. Sakena Yacoobi, Afghan woman educator.
The 3rd SunHak Peace Prize Award Ceremony was held on 1.5 by the heavenly calendar in the 7th year of Cheon Il Guk (Feb. 9, 2019) at Jamsil Lotte Hotel Crystal Ballroom with current and former heads of state and VIPs from over 100 nations in attendance.
The SunHak Peace Prize was jointly awarded to Dr. Akinwumi Ayodeji Adesina and Ms. Waris Dirie. As an agricultural economist and the president of the African Development Bank Group (AFDB), Dr. Akinwumi Adesina has been a leader in agricultural innovation for 30 years. He has contributed greatly to food security in Africa and improving Africa’s economies through wise governance. Waris Dirie, who, earlier on in life was a supermodel, is from Somalia. She is widely acclaimed for first raising awareness about the problems of FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) in international society and has been working as a human rights activist to eliminate the practice of FGM and contributing to children’s education.
The SunHak Peace Prize will be a light of hope to all those who long for peace as a prize that searches for and encourages great people across the world who spare nothing in committing themselves and making noble sacrifices for the sake of world peace.
4) Assembly of the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP)
The International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace has been contributing to the realization of world peace by actively working centering on True Parents’ vision of peace to deal with critical issues happening around the world, such as territorial conflicts and terror, religious and racial disputes, climate change, and poverty.
On 1.6 in 5th year of Cheon Il Guk by the heavenly calendar (Feb. 2, 2017), 450 parliamentarians from 120 nations participated in the inauguration of IAPP-Korea held at the main conference room of the National Assembly of Korea in Seoul. On this day, participants called for action under the theme: “Overcoming the Crisis of Northeast Asia and the Vision and Role of IAPP toward Peace and Reunification of the Korean Peninsula,” and adopted the Seoul Declaration.
On Feb. 19, 2018, some 450 parliamentarians from 70 nations gathered for the International Leadership Conference and adopted the ‘Declaration of Peace in Northeast Asia,’ a call to resolve the North Korean nuclear threat to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula and for the active involvement of international society.
The Assembly of the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace 2019 was held on such a foundation in the 7th year of Cheon Il Guk, attracting 600 participants from 80 nations including current and former heads of state, parliamentarians, and other delegates. Discussions were conducted on how to establish a substantial and yet stable peace structure on the Korean Peninsula on the basis of the recent past three inter-Korean summits and the North Korea-US summits. The assembly provided a means to garner interest and active support from international society regarding peace on the Korean Peninsula. Peace Road 2019 was launched, and the IAPP Resolution to usher in the era of a Heavenly Unified Korea was adopted.
5) Interreligious Association for Peace and Development (IAPD)
True Parents have committed themselves devotedly to laying a foundation that can unify nations and the world by first laying an internal foundation of unity centered on religions. They conducted an interreligious movement and interfaith activities through religious councils of diverse religious groups. Finally, they connected this internal foundation to the external foundation of unity laid through the Victory over Communism movement. On Nov. 13, 2017, in the presence of leaders of major religious groups in the world, True Parents specially founded the Interreligious Association for Peace and Development as a global interreligious peace movement organization that will provide people of faith with the opportunity to participate in creating religious peace and harmony and take the lead in the realization of world peace.
In 2018, IAPD launched national chapters in 70 nations around the world to further expand the peace movement across the world. IAPD sessions were part of regional World Summits held in Korea, the US, Brazil, Senegal, South Africa and Nepal, presenting the direction and role religious leaders should take to bring about peace across the world.
It was on this foundation that the IAPD Assembly 2019 invited people of faith across the world to support the realization of the Heavenly Unified Korea in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement and establishment of the provisional government of Korea (in exile in Shanghai). This became a special time of resolution for all people of faith as they discussed ways to bring about peace and unification and how to connect peace in the Korean Peninsula to the realization of world peace.
6) Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP)
The Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP) was founded in April 1992 in Seoul. On this day, the True Parents proclaimed the advent of the women’s era.
True Father: “Women stand in the center of a changing society, and women need to act as the leading role of the world peace movement. Please establish families of true love and build a healthy society and a world of peace based on motherly love.”
WFWP has sought to practice True Parents’ founding spirit in details by actively conducting activities in underdeveloped nations and conflict areas around the world, with a major focus on women and children, particularly with enhancing their rights and conducting peace initiatives centered on them.
In acknowledgement of these efforts, WFWP received ‘general consultative status with the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)’ in 1997. This status has been granted to only 140 NGOs out of the 3,600 NGOs under the United Nations. In Korea, only two NGOs, Good Neighbors and WFWP, have received general consultative status.
Through its international network, WFWP has dispatched volunteer members to 160 nations around the world. WFWP is not only focusing on raising woman leaders but is also providing supplies as well as providing the necessary aid and education to help people become independent from poverty and illiteracy. Since 1998, WFWP has also been providing aid to North Korea and educating North Korean defectors.
Aside from this, WFWP is also actively working with other NGOs, and through diverse programs and exchange activities between nations, it has been building many friendships that can assist Korea to become one nation again.
7) International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences (ICUS)
The International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences (ICUS) brings together scholars of international science circles to discuss about the unification of studies centered on absolute values and the realization of a peaceful world as advocated by the True Parents for the realization of God’s Will. The 1st ICUS conference was hosted on Nov. 23, 1972 under the topic, “Moral Orientation of the Sciences.” ICUS was held a total of 22 times in Korea, Japan, the United States and the UK until the year 2000.
ICUS aims to establish absolute values centered on God as well as exchange and unify knowledge for the realization of a world of peace. The conference brings together scholars worldwide in an academic discussion to solve the difficult problems humanity is facing. ICUS was discontinued for a period of time then revived in 2017 according to True Mother’s directives. The conference, revived after exactly 17 years, addressed diverse topics on how to protect human life and form a better more comfortable living environment by preserving the earth and reversing the damage to the natural environment.
8) International Academic Symposium of the Hyojeong Academy of Arts and Sciences
True Parents first revealed their plans for the Hyojeong Academy of Arts and Sciences at the Korean and Japanese Cheon Il Guk Leaders’ Kick-Off Ceremony of Harmony and Unity to Fulfill Vision 2020 on 9.6 by the heavenly calendar in the 4th year of Cheon Il Guk (Oct. 6, 2016, Yongpyong Resort). The international Academic Symposium of the Hyojeong Academy of Arts and Sciences was inaugurated as the umbrella organization overseeing the Cheon Il Guk Academy that was launched in the 4th year of Cheon Il Guk, the Professors World Peace Academy (PWPA), the International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences (ICUS), and the Unification Thought Research Institute.
The role of the International Academic Symposium of the Hyojeong Academy of Arts and Sciences is to bring into cooperative relationship not only the four affiliated organizations mentioned above, but also Sun Moon University, the University of Bridgeport, their school foundations as well as affiliated research institutes, academic organizations and activities at home and abroad with the purpose of, first, academically systematizing the culture of heart of Godism, and demonstrating True Parents’ love and concern, and second, to contribute to the accomplishment of national restoration by beginning to define a unifying thread among all the sciences that will enable all sciences to be understood in relation to Unification Thought.
